Interview with Mr. Jeff Nixon, CEO and Founder, Steelthorn Software

Posted: 02 May 2009 08:59 AM PDT

This is the third interview in our series of interviews with various CEOs of BlackBerry software companies to get their insights into the Blackberry industry.  Our third interviewee is with Mr. Jeff Nixon, the CEO and Founder of Steelthorn Software.

Steelthorn Software is the maker of various quality (not to mention cool) Blackberry apps such as the best-selling StormLock, Quickpull and IntelliBerry.

1. Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Jeff Mixon and I am the CEO and founder of Steelthorn Software, a unique and fast growing company which writes cool applications for BlackBerry devices. We are currently based out of Jacksonville, Florida.

2. What BlackBerry do you use now and what PDAs have you used in the past?

I primary use a BlackBerry Bold, although recently I’ve been trying to give the Storm a fair shot. In the past I have used the BlackBerry 8120, 8800, 8100, 7100g, and 6210. (Sorry, no Curve!)

3. Why is the BlackBerry a good platform to develop on?

BlackBerry devices have always been noted for their reliability, and this is the most important building block for building any application. The BlackBerry platform also leverages the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), which is extremely popular and has a lot of existing tools and community infrastructure that make it easier to get started building enterprise level applications. Aside from the technical implications, what makes the BlackBerry a great platform is its user base. BlackBerry devices have a devoted user base many of whom are fiercely loyal to their device and are always looking for ways to make their lives run easier and more efficiently.

4. Other than your own, name your three favorite applications for the BlackBerry.

Every time I get a new device the first application I install is probably Google Maps. I also use BeejiveIM as my chat client and I keep going back and forth between Slacker and Pandora when I get bored of my music collection.

5. What’s your favorite trick or feature that you use on your BlackBerry?

I actually use custom AutoText entries a lot ( Options > AutoText). You can create custom character combintations or words to represent longer phrases. For instance, “sg”<space> replaces with “Sounds good.” and “iob” replaces with “I’m on my way. Order me a beer!”. I think AutoText is one of the several unsung heroes of the BlackBerry OS.

6. What’s the most important feature that the BlackBerry lacks?

Recently released BlackBerry devices have really been amped up hardware-wise, but of course they could always be faster and more efficient. This may be rather broad, but from a development perspective I think the BlackBerry really lacks an open framework for application development. To RIM, security is paramount, and understandbly so, but finding a better balance between functionality and security would significantly enrich the BlackBerry experience for users. If you’ve ever asked yourself “Why isn’t there an application that does [insert functionality here]?”, it may be because it simply isn’t feasible with the current development framework.

7. Where do you see the focus of third party programs for the BlackBerry going over the next few months?

I think a shift has definitely begun from more business or enterprise related applications to more social and media oriented applications. The availability of higher processing power in newer devices as well as 3G networking will make room for more rich application experiences.

The Storm Slider: Ideal lock for BlackBerry Storm

Posted: 01 May 2009 11:20 PM PDT

Why do we need Storm Slider?
Any person who is using the new Blackberry Storm will find the phone lock not upto expectations. The default phone lock tends to get unlocked due to touches and is not effective. This application developed by David Grant is very helpful in overcoming this problem. This application locks the cell phone and it must be unlocked by touching the surface and sliding it in the fashion of a slider. This enables the phone to be secure in spite of accidental brushes or touches on the surface of the cell phone.

Modes of working
This application has three modes wherein the phone gets locked out. The first mode is when the phone gets locked when the display switches off or fades out. The next mode is when phone is restarted. The pass word must be entered in order to use the phone. This restricts the usage of the cell phone by any other person. This provides security to the phone. The last mode is when a call is in progress.

This mode is specifically to avoid accidental usage by brushing against cheeks or face. This application has a four digit password that can be used to secure your phone from other persons without the knowledge of the owner. The application has the option to run in both the portrait and landscape mode. The special feature of this application is that it comes with lifetime updates and support.

Features
This application is a smooth and quick locking application. It has a default lock and unlock button. It is easy to install. It also has customizable options to change the timeout settings and change the password. This application as described earlier works in three modes. The application has a "end" button during a phone call which when pressed will terminate the phone call and unlock the phone.

Requirements
This phone has a single display dimension of 480 x 360 pixels. This application is specifically for the Blackberry Storm and has been designed and developed specifically for this Blackberry model. The operating system is the most important part of the cell phone. It controls the working of the cell phone and it acts as the interface between the cell phone and the hardware. This application can run with only the 4.7 version of the Blackberry operating system. Storm Slider costs $2.99.
